Dr. Kiran Thakur is the Founder and Chairman of Lokmanya Multipurpose Co-Op Society Ltd. and Advisory Editor of Daily Tarun Bharat, Belgaum. Born on 7th April 1952 in Belgaum, he completed his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from Dharwad, Karnataka, and later pursued a Diploma in Mass Communication from Dr. Rajendra Prasad College of Mass Communications, Mumbai.
He began his journalism career in 1968 as a Sports Reporter with Daily Tarun Bharat, a Marathi newspaper founded by his father, Late Shri Baburao Thakur. Under his leadership as Editor since 1979, the publication grew into a widely respected publication with eight editions across Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa.
In 1995, inspired by stalwarts of India’s cooperative movement, he established Lokmanya Co-Operative Credit Society Ltd., Belgaum. By 2007, Lokmanya became India’s first Multi-State Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society, marking a significant milestone in providing financial assistance to small business owners and entrepreneurs.
Dr. Thakur has made notable contributions to education, serving as Chairman of the Governing Council of South Konkan Education Society and President of Belgaum Jilha Prathamik Shikshan Samiti. Nearly 10,000 students benefit from the institutions he guides.
His social responsibility initiatives include the Lok Kalp Foundation, which works towards uplifting economically weaker sections and has adopted villages across the Karnataka-Goa border region. Through journalism, cooperative leadership, and education, Dr. Thakur continues to contribute significantly to social and economic development.
